Disadvantages of Unschooling

The main thing to understand about unschooling is that it is a process-oriented schooling methodology. The student learns through the process of learning. One consequence of this is that if a given student lacks the motivation to learn, unschooling will be a less than fruitful endeavor.

The second disadvantage is that students may never encounter or may lack any interest in an area of study. This can lead to gaps or "holes" in your child's education.

Finally, there is a practical concern. Even if your children are excited and real learning is taking place, there are a number of locations that require documentation of the education your child is receiving. Unschooling is unconcerned with such documentation. As such there are times when documenting an unschooling experience can be an extremely difficult endeavor.
